American Diabetes Awareness Month 2021

WHEREAS, each year, more than 40,000 individuals are diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes (T1D) in the United States; and
WHEREAS, Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease with no known prevention or cure, in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a necessary hormone that converts food to energy; and
WHEREAS, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 187,000 children younger than 20 are among the 1.6 million Americans who live with T1D, a 30% increase from 2017; and
WHEREAS, approximately 736,000 individuals in the state of Arizona, have been diagnosed with the disease; and
WHEREAS, an increase in community awareness is necessary to put a stop to the diabetes epidemic.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Joseph C. Winfield, Mayor of Oro Valley, do hereby proclaim November 2021 to be
AMERICAN DIABETES AWARENESS MONTH
in Oro Valley and encourage all residents to recognize American Diabetes Awareness Month and be part of the American Diabetes Association’s movement to confront, fight and, most importantly, change the future of this deadly disease.
