ORO VALLEY, Ariz. (Oct. 8, 2024) – The Pima County Regional Flood Control District has completed work on the Cañada del Oro (CDO) Wash Levee Augmentation Project ahead of schedule.

Previously closed for the safety of the public, The Loop trail is now open in the area with fresh pavement and striping. In some areas where it was necessary, a new flood wall was built to protect the homes and businesses that rely on the levee.

“We know how anxious the community is to be able to enjoy this portion of The Loop again,” said Brian Jones, deputy director of Pima County Regional Flood Control District. “So, we really appreciate all our construction partners working so hard to get this project completed well ahead of schedule.”

Following the Bighorn Fire of 2020, a post-fire hydrological study performed by the Flood Control District identified seven critical areas within the wash requiring sediment removal and flood wall installation to improve the channel’s capacity and manage increased flow rates.

This critical project enhanced flood protection for homes and businesses in the area and ensured continued compliance with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) regulations.

Originally slated for completion at the end of November 2024, the project was completed in the seven critical areas earlier this month. Click here to read the county’s notice.

Pima County Regional Flood Control was the lead agency on this project, which was funded by the District’s Tax Levy as well as a $2.5 Million FEMA grant. KE&G Construction was contracted to perform the work. It was performed at no cost to the Town of Oro Valley.
